Recommended Web Browser
(free): FIREFOX [Allegedly
faster and more secure than Internet Explorer.]
Recommended security for PC's. Spybot (free), Ad-Aware (free)
and Norton Internet Security (which
includes a firewall and Norton Antivirus). It is not recommended to use XP's
firewall.
Additional
Installation Information and Procedural Notes:
1) Uninstall any anti-virus
programs before installing Norton Internet
Security (which includes Norton Antivirus).
2) Purchase a new Norton CD every year and mail in the rebate (Upgrading Norton
Antivirus with a purchased CD is recommended as a better course of action,
than upgrading via the internet), and send in the old Norton disk as proof
of purchase (you'll never need the old disk anyway).
Or if you lost the proof of purchase (for PC's) you can open Norton › Help › About
Norton Antivirus › hit Print Screen, open Word › New Document › Edit › Paste › Print
and use the print out as proof of purchase for Norton. If you have 2002 or
earlier version of Norton Antivirus, then uninstall Norton, and reinstall Norton
Internet Security. If you have a newer version of Norton Antivirus, then just
install Norton Internet Security, over the old version.
3) Never run two or more of these security programs at the same time. Run one
security program at a time otherwise they will fight with each other to try
to gain dominance in your PC.
Recommended Weekly Maintenance for PC's:
In this order: 1) Sbybot, 2) Ad-Aware (Sbybot or Ad-Aware
in either order, actually), 3) Disk Clean-up, 4) Norton Antivirus, (and if
your computer is clean, then continue) 5) Scan Disk (XP will prompt you to
restart), 6) Disk Defragmenter (then restart manually). By the way, if you
have a MAC, you don't have to do any of this.
